Lawn overdue…

It’s time….

I must replace my tired, moss infested play lawn with a new updated lawn.

I have had too many water fights with my children, too many picnic lunches in the sun, too many garden tours, I must kill, till, and renovate the beloved play area before the season really gets in full swing.

After the soils are conditioned with organic compost and gravel for excellent drainage, my contractor will be using a revolutionary spreading perennial ryegrass. It has a fine, tight-knit texture, a rich, deep green color, low water usage, and if damaged can self rejuvenate it self (thus the name I suppose)

It is perfect for high traffic use areas and I can hardly wait to give it a trial run in my play area lawn.

So give us a call and let’s get you started  using our superior Portland organic soil amendments and organic mulch products for garden development and Cedar chips for those play zones !

More than just Vegetables

Throw open the windows and take a whiff !

As the sun begins to come out and warms the earth and surrounding air, you will no doubt, begin to catch the mingling of flower scents wafting around your nose. “Where is that fragrance coming from”…. It’s lovely ! “mmmm… it reminds me of my Grandma’s house when I was a child”…

Invest in your comfort

There is no doubt, I prefer to be outside just as much as I can, however, I must admit- I am older than I used to be…. When I choose to go outside, the decision is based upon where I can be most comfortable.

Over the last few years, I have really made the financial investment in my comfort while relaxing outdoors.  I have built water proof structures and purchased all weather cushions,  furniture, portable heating elements and… even an outdoor rug!

I am sooooo happy when I am cuddled up on a weekend morning, rain or shine, in my outdoor space. My eye wanders around the garden watching the birds come and go, listening to their chatter. My Kitty comes for a visit and  a snuggle before wandering off to chase an irresistible bug.

I have worked hard for many years on this outdoor space of mine, and I have to say it is worth every penny I have spent, every hour of toil- truly.

Be sure to consider your old age when you begin to plan your garden landscape.  It happens to all of us…. Soon or later.

Creating a seating terrace out of pavers or gravel with a roof for shade and protection from the rain is a must for all Portland area gardens.

Invest in your happiness… believe me, you will be glad you did !

Get out and “Discover Play”!

“The most vital gardeners are not necessarily the most knowledgeable or the most avid collectors, but those who combine a child’s curiosity with unfailing powers of observation.” (Madeline Keeve)

Seeing the world through the eyes of your “child within” should be a constant pursuit for all humans. Especially when it comes to creating the outdoor play areas for our children.

Children experience the natural environment differently than adults.  Adults typically see nature as background for what they are doing.  Children experience nature, not as background for events, but rather as a stimulator and experiential component of their activities.  Nature for a child is sheer sensory experience. Children judge the natural setting not by its aesthetics, but rather by how they can interact with it.

As we raise our families and begin to develop the play areas in our back yards, it is important to include the type of “natural play experience” that they can interact with and manipulate.

Don’t try to build something that is perfectly safe and sterile for children, give them something to STIMULATE their brains and allow for experimentation and manipulation.

Consider including items such as:

-       mud holes, and water catching elements.

-       “tolerant” vegetation that can be utilized for play activities, trees, shrubs, flowers, and long grasses.

-       Animals, creatures in ponds, and other living things chickens, bunny cages and small fenced in areas where the animals can be allowed to frolic with the children.

-       Sand, always best if it can be mixed with water

-       Places and features to sit on, in, or under.

-       Different levels and nooks and crannies, places that offer privacy and alternate views.

-       Structures, equipment and materials that can be changed, actually or in their imaginations, this will include plentiful loose parts and pieces that can be utilized for play acting.

-       Natural elements such and stumps, logs and boulders with extra dirt for creating mounds and excavating holes, creating roadways etc…

-       Fruits or vegetables should always be incorporated near play areas so that the children can snack on blueberries, strawberries, sugar pea etc… while they play.

Discovery play gardens offer children chances to manipulate the environment and explore, to wonder and experiment, to pretend, to understand themselves, and to interact with nature, animals and interesting insects and with other children.  They are environments that encourage children’s rich and complex play and greatly expand the learning opportunities of just conventional playgrounds,  Children’s discovery play gardens are places where children can reclaim the magic that is their birthright- the ability to learn in a natural environment through exploration, discovery and the power of their own imagination.

So give us a call and let’s get you started creating your “Discovery Play area” using our superior Portland organic soil amendments and organic mulch products for garden development and Cedar chips for those play zones !

All the gain with no pain

If you are like me, you enjoy “working smart”.  Today, let’s take a look at the smart way to remove portions of existing lawn over the winter so that, come next spring, you will be all set to begin developing a new portion of your garden.

This technique is so simple you will be feeling rather smug when you watch your neighbors toiling in their landscape next year.  The key is that you need to plan ahead, and start this project 6 months prior to when you really WANT to garden.

So, begin by marking out the area you want to delete the lawn. Cover the entire area with a layer of newspaper six sheets thick. With your garden hose, spray the newspaper lightly with water to keep it in place during the last step.  Lastly, place a nice thick layer of organic compost about 5-6” deep over the entire area.  Personally, I like to use the mushroom compost sold at Dean Innovations landscape supply center in Portland, OR.

Okay, so now by using the newspaper and compost, you have blocked sunlight from reaching that existing lawn all winter, and it will quickly begin to die and decompose. Next spring, a quick turn of soils will incorporate the compost into the old grass compost, and if you lay another 3 “ of compost over that soil, you merely have to wait another couple months while the earthworms and other microbial insects do bit of mixing (a natural rototiller) mixing their castings amongst the compost…. I think you get the idea here…

Once the weather cooperates, you are set to plant !

Ooooo lah, lah- you are BRILLIANT !

Before you relax for the season….

I know, the weather is cooling down and you have been working so hard all year in the garden you just want to relax, hop into your Lazy-boy recliner, grab the remote, a bag of chips and get caught up on the football season.

But do yourself a favor and don’t pick up the remote until the lawn care is done. Next year’s lawn will be the better for it, and you will be glad you took the time.

Fall (late August through September) is arguably the most important time of year to get your lawn cared for before the onset of the next six months of rain and soil compaction.  This end of year lawn care will get your future green carpet off to a fantastic start.

First, you will want to give a light thatching or plug removal, a light application of an organic fertilizer with higher concentration of Potassium and Nitrogen (example: 21-7-14). Next, sprinkle about ¼ “ organic compost with a pelletized lime and rake into the plug holes, allow a few weeks for seasonal rains to soak in, and then raise the lawn mower blade high to allow for a longer late season final cut.

This late season final lawn care will provide a fantastic organic growing medium for the roots of you lawn which will, in turn, be the strong spring growing lawn that you will be looking for next season.

Now, enjoy your well earned bag of chips….. and “Go Beavers!”

and remember, for all your organic landscape needs and firewood, give Dean Innovation a call 503-281-1673.

Get a load of this !

It may be pushing 100 degrees on the ol’ outdoor thermometer, but I am already beginning to “fly south” and prepare for the winter.  Being a good girl scout as a child must have taught me to keep looking ahead for the next opportunity to “be prepared”.

Yes, it is just a few days from fall, and I have just ordered and received a beautiful load of cut split and dried firewood from our best source for outdoor wood products; Dean innovations landscape supply.

This wood arrived just days after I ordered it, the delivery truck was perfectly suited to delicately place (ok, it tumbled delicately ) onto my driveway in a perfect pile.  I ordered a mixture of Juniper ( a  “softwood”  providing a beautiful fragrance and quick burning for excellent lighting capabilities) and White Oak, ( a hardwood providing the fire with a long slow burn.)   The cut size and split wood is consistent and very easy to stack into 4’ tall by 8 ‘ long rows. and have it stacked and ready to go should we begin to feel a slight chill in the air and require a cozy fire as my family enjoys the autumn nights in the garden.

My family loves the fact that I am always prepared, and yours can too !

Get your load of firewood delivered TODAY !

And be sure to call us for all of your organic soil amendments required: Portland Bark Mulch, Portland  compost, and organic top soil. (503) 281-1637.
